Los Angeles Spine Surgeon K. Rad Payman, MD Treats Iraq War Vet After Humvee Explosion
By: K. Rad Payman on March 7, 2017
Jim Schneiter served two tours of duty with the US Army in Iraq. During this time he was already suffering from back pain due to lifting heavy objects, and the pain became debilitating after a Humvee in which he was riding hit an improvised explosive device. Despite the pain of his injuries James continued on with his duties until the end of his second tour. He then consulted with the VA for treatment of his back. Jim was placed on pain medications, however the VA did not approve surgery to relieve his pain, stating that he was too young for spinal surgery.
Jim ultimately decided that he didn't want to remain dependent on pain medications. He consulted with spine surgeon K. Rad Payman, MD who diagnosed severe lumbar disc herniation. Dr. Payman's first surgical choice was artificial disc replacement. When Jim’s insurance did not approve the surgery Dr. Payman offered Jim the option of an anterior lumbar fusion which was ultimately performed. Jim says he is now 100% back to normal and has returned to his job in construction for the military. He says he is off all of his pain medications and is able to enjoy quality time with his wife and children. Dr. Payman and Jim appear in this TV news story:
