Los Angeles, CA - “Back pain can be caused by from over-exercise, injuries or degenerative disease, but advances in non-surgical treatments and minimally invasive spine surgery can relieve the pain and improve range of motion,” says Rad Payman, MD of Advanced Spine Institute. “Many patients will respond to non-surgical treatment. Regaining ‘range of motion’ is important for these patients, not only for their general quality of life but also so they may continue to enjoy their favorite activities. When surgery is required minimally invasive procedures can dramatically reduce downtime for recovery and relieve pain."
Minimally invasive spine surgery
“The benefits of minimally invasive techniques in spinal surgery include more than just making a smaller incision,” says Dr. Payman. “Most important is what’s being done in the body during a surgical procedure. With less disturbance to the body patients heal faster, they usually recover more fully and can return to activities like sports, going to the gym or other normal activities.”
“One of the common causes of lower back pain is lumbar spinal stenosis, which is the compression of spinal nerves caused by narrowing of spinal canal. Spinal stenosis can also affect the spine in the neck region. Symptoms include back pain, burning or an aching pain in the buttocks that radiates to the legs (sciatica) and weakness in the legs. Treatment may include non-surgical options such as physical therapy and medication. If these treatments don’t bring relief, surgery is the next consideration. The two main surgical procedures to treat lumbar spinal stenosis are laminectomy and spinal fusion. A micro-laminectomy may relieve the pain for patients with symptomatic, painful lumbar spinal stenosis with less downtime than a traditional laminectomy.”
Dr. Payman stresses that patient involvement during treatment, surgery and recovery is important. Contact the Advanced Spine Institute at 818.501.2001 for more information on minimally invasive and non-surgical treatments. Visit
